CHAPTER NINE

Nola

Alistair removes the butt plug slowly. After cleaning it in the vanity and tucking himself in, he prepares me two wet washcloths.

One, he dabs at my center before rearranging my underwear back in place, then runs it along the inside of my thighs. The other, he pats on the corners of my mouth for the smeared lipstick.

“All done.” After disposing of both, he returns to me. His eyes study mine, his hands are clasped together. “So.”

A knock interrupts us. Alistair ignores it completely.

“What’s the plan?”

“I need more details to make an educated decision.” I smooth my messy hair down, picking up the speed of my speech. “What exactly did they say?”

Alistair beams at me. This isn’t a smirk, not at all. It’s a look of contentment.

He’s proud of how I am choosing to handle it.

“As I said, they boasted about how the prices to manufacture sex toys here are lower.”

The redness of exertion on his cheeks dissolves. Other than an unruly strand of hair and his slightly crumpled suit jacket, no one would ever imagine this somber man just finished drilling me into the bathroom wall.

“I deduced from what they said that their local clients can estimate what each product should cost like you’re aware of those of your suppliers back home. My bet is, the Rose family managed to get their hands on the US prices. They can’t charge it to their old clientele, or they’ll leave them. They can, however, will ask and receive it from unsuspecting clients overseas.”

He notices my fallen expression, gripping my chin to tilt my head up.

“Nola, you’re still brand new to this world, it’s a wonder your shop is turning profits, as is. I’m so proud of you. You can’t blame yourself for them giving you a false picture of what the market here is like, or for laughing about it. Not. Your. Fault.” And then his signature smirk arrives. “I’ll fuck your cunt, ass, and mouth a million times over until you get it into your head.”

“The part about it not being my fault is clear.” I sigh. “It’s just… Do I even have the right to be upset? Isn’t it their right to charge anything they want? Free market and all?”

“It’s not about the prices. It’s a matter of respect. If anyone talked shit about me,”—his nostrils flare—“looked down on me. Would you allow it?”

The mere thought sparks my immediate fury. “I would’ve punched their fucking throats.”

“Remind me not to mess with you.” Alistair chuckles, shaking his head.

“I’m not doing business with them.” I come to the inevitable conclusion. My shoulders slump, disappointment dampens my eyes. “At least we gained a New Year’s trip out of it, right?”

“Maybe all isn’t lost.”

An abundance of scenarios play in my head, none are viable. There’s no one I know here, no friends or business connections. No one will read their emails on what should be a national holiday.

“Would you be willing to hear a solution I might have?” His gaze dances across the bathroom.
